 "And they're off" must surely be ringing in the ears of all who were fortunate enough to attend the very first race meeting of the 1999-2000 season at Nad Al Sheba last Sunday night. Generously, and traditionally, sponsored by the Al Muhairbi Group, Sunday's racing certainly delighted old and new racegoers alike.

 The improvements to the racecourse, the paddock area, the presentation area and the grandstand, you read about last week were fully appreciated by all. The tremendous effort that went in to this enhancement process was surely rewarded by the overall outlook and ambience at the first race meeting, and it can only get better.

 As well as being attended by the Faraj bin Butti Al Muhairbi and his sons, Sunday's racing was further enriched by the gracious attendance of Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, whose horse Mushaagib won the third event.

 Speedfit Too also ran well for Sheikh Rashid later in the evening when finishing second behind Snow Kid in the first of the many turf races to be held at Nad Al Sheba this season.

 Derek returns

 International racing commentator, Derek Thompson is, of course, back for the Dubai racing season, and it took him no time to get in to the swing of things as he conducted the interesting and informative interviews over the course during the evening.

 You can expect to see Derek at all the race meetings, and there are sure to be surprise celebrity visits during the season, which will undoubtedly be included in the race night broadcast programming. Watch this space for further details.

 Looking forward to this evening's racing at Nad Al Sheba and, once again it's a quality programme of six races, the first race being for the Purebred Arabians and is slated for 7pm.

 Special meeting

 Tonight's scheduled race meeting is a little special. The Dubai Racing Club has decided to reciprocate the contribution and support of its seasonal box holders by giving each organisation a complimentary race on this eveningｹs programme.

 The improvements to the grandstand make it an ideal hospitality venue, not to mention the bird's eye view of the racecourse and paddock, which go a long way in making the Nad Al Sheba grandstand hospitality boxes the place to be on race night.

 The names associated with the races tonight are synonymous with excellence in the UAE. This season sees the Al Rostamani Group, the Al Shafar Group, the Al Tajir Group, HSBC Bank, DNATA, and the Dubai World Cup pledge their support and enthusiasm for the Dubai Racing Club and Nad Al Sheba with their respective season Hospitality boxes.

 The Dubai Racing Club holds its sponsors and supporters in the highest regard, and is fully aware of their integral role in making the Club what it is today. Thus, this humble gesture on their part is an opportunity to thank these organisations.
