Tokyo-based Sasebo Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.(SSK) became a wholly owned subsidiary of Osaka-based Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. on October 1, 2014.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) announced it will book an extraordinary loss in the amount of 39,841 million yen in connection with two cruise ships for Aida Cruises, an affiliated company of Carnival Corp. in the consolidated financial results for the first half of fiscal 2014 ending March 31, 2015. MHI also booked an extraordinary loss of 64,126 million yen in its consolidated financial results for fiscal 2013.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has determined, effective October 1, 2015 to establish two new group companies at its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works' Koyagi Plant - one (MHI Ship & Ocean Engineering Co., Ltd.) to undertake ship construction and the other to manufacture hull blocks - and to transfer its operations in construction of large-size commercial ships in the Nagasaki district to the new firms. The company will separate cruise ship construction from its commercial ship business and operate as an engineering business under a new organization to be launched within the Commercial Aviation & Transportation Systems business domain. No changes will be made in the structures of shipbuilding activities for commercial vessels at Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works and vessels for the Japan Ministry of Defense at Nagasaki Shipyard.

On October 30, 2015, MHI newly booked 30.9 billion yen as an extraordinary loss in its passenger ship sector, which has been booked a total of over 130 billion yen as a loss.

Japan Marine United (JMU) delivered the Nivaga III (1337gt, LOA: 60.50m, Beam: 12.60m, Depth: 6.00m, Pass: 320(international)/429 (domestic)) to Tuvalu government at port of Funafuti, Tuvalu on December 9, 2015. The ship was built at JMU Tsurumi Works, Yokohama, under a Japanese ODA (Official Development Assistance) programme. She will replace the existing Nivaga II, and will ply between Tuvalu and Fiji, and among domestic ports in Tuvalu.

On February 4, 2016, MHI newly booked 22.1 billion yen as an extraordinary loss in its passenger ship sector, which has been booked a total of over 160 billion yen as a loss.

On August 30, 2016, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) announced that it has entered talks with Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. toward forming new domestic alliances.

On October 1, 2016, Kawasaki Heavy Industries said it would consider a drastic revision of its shipbuilding business due to its retrograde profitability and indicated that it may withdraw from the business.

On October 18, 2016, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. announced that it will scale down its shipbuilding operations by withdrawing from the money-losing large cruise ship business. It will concentrate on building small & medium-size cruise ships and car ferries.

In May 2017, Osaka-based Sanoyasu Shipbuilding Corporation accepted an order of a car ferry for the first time in about 20 years, and will restart building car ferries at Mizushima Shipyard in Kurashiki in autumn of 2018. A 2,800gt car ferry for Nankai Ferry.

On June 14, 2017, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced that it reached a basic agreement with Oshima Shipbuilding. towards the formation of an alliance in the commercial ship business.

On April 1, 2018, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. will become a pure holding company, and change in business name to Mitsui E&S Holdings.
