On October 1, 2014, 'Shodoshima Kyuko Ferry' changed its trade name to 'Shodoshima Ferry', 'Shodoshima Ferry' to 'Shodoshima Teshima Ferry', and 'Marine Kanko Kisen' to 'Shodoshima Kyuko Ferry' respectively.
Tomogashima Kisen, which operates the Kada, Wakayama prefecture-Tomogashima route, was out of service in October 2014, because its Nonaura Sanbashi(=pier) was damaged by the typhoon No.19 (Vongfong), but resumed the operation on November 22, 2014.
Naoshima-based Shikoku Kisen's new ferry, Naoshima (1,099gt) entered service on the Takamatsu-Naoshima-Uno route on May 1, 2015.
Awaji City's fast ferry, 'Marine Awaji' (120gt) will enter service on the Akashi-Iwaya route in August 2015. Awaji Jenova Line will operate her.
JR Nishi Nihon Miyajima Ferry will build a replacement ship for the Nanaura Maru (built in 1987). The new 'Nanaura Maru' will enter service in November 2016.
Uwajima-based Ehime Minami Kisen closed a ferry service between Uwajima and Kushima on April 4, 2016 after the Kushima Ohashi bridge opened on April 3, 2016.
On April 10, 2016, the Komataki (V, 19gt) entered service on the Hososhima-Innoshima route operated by Onomichi City. She is the first Japanese aircraft carrier-style double-ended car ferry.
Takamatsu-based Shodoshima Ferry launched the Shodoshima Maru (1,257gt, LOA: 71.9m, Pass: 490, Car: 55) on the Takamatsu-Tonosho route on March 10, 2017.
On July 2017, Awaji Kanku Line started operating services on the Awaji Shima (Sumoto)-Kansai International Airport route.
On August 10, 2017, Uchinomi Ferry announced that the Sun Olive Sea (52gt, Pass:68), a fast ferry on the Shodoshima-Takamatsu route will be out of service from September 1, 2017 because of decreasing passengers and lack of crewmembers.
Shikoku Kisen will launch the Asahi (987gt, LOA: 74m, Beam: 15m, Pass: 500, Vehicle: 12 buses or 61 cars, Built at Fujiwara Shipbuilding at the cost of 1.4 billion yen) on the Takamatsu-Naoshima route, etc. on March 16, 2018. The Asahi II (993gt, 1998) will be replaced.
On February 28, 2018, Nakajima Kisen's Nanashima (765gt) was completed at Naikai Zosen. She will enter service on the Mitsuhama-Kutsuna islands route on March 16.
On May 18, 2018, Ryobi Ferry announced that it will launch a cruise ferry, Olympia Dream 2 (about 900gt, Pass: 248, Car: 60) on the Shin Okayama-Tonosho (Shodoshima) route by the end of April 2019.The total construction costs are estimated at 1.4 billion yen. Eiji Mitooka will handle her interior design,and Fujiwara Shipbuilding will build her.
Awaji Kanku Line, which operates the Sumoto (Awaji Island)-Kansai International Airport with the Marine Flower 2 (104gt), will be out of business on July 13, 2018. Awaji Kanku Line was founded in February 2017, and began to operate the route on July 9, 2017, but has faced a low demand despite its expectation.
Tsuneishi Facilities & Craft delivered the "Red Bird" (61gt) aluminum alloy pure-passenger ferry to Shikoku Kisen on August 30, 2018.
Shikoku District Transport Bureau announced that a public vessel, Seisho (82gt, Pass: 180), which plies between Oshima where National Sanatorium Oshima Seisho-En is located, and Takamatsu will accept the public from April 26, 2019.
On March 7, 2019, the Olympia Dream Seto (about 900gt) , which is being built for Ryobi Ferry took the water at Fujiwara Shipbuilding in Imabari. She is set to enter service on the Shin Okayama-Tonosho (Shodoshima) route on May 1, 2019.
On April 22, 2019, Omishima Blue Line's new ferry "Mishima" (220gt) entered service. The "Ferry Mishima" (213gt) was replaced.
Ryobi Ferry's Olympia Dream Seto (942gt) entered service on the Shin Okayama-Tonosho (Shodoshima) route on May 1, 2019.
Shodoshima-based Kokusai Ferry, an affiliated business of Ryobi Shodoshima Ferry Group will swallow Ryobi Ferry in Okayama, and change its trade name to Kokusai Ryobi Ferry on April 1, 2020.
Uchinomi Ferry, which has much financial difficulty due to the coronavirus pandemic was bought by Kokusai Ryobi Ferry on August 31, 2020. Uchinomi Ferry's Kusakabe (Shodoshima)-Takamatsu route will be closed on March 11, 2021.
Shiyujima Kaiun's new ferry "Meon" (280gt, 11knots, Pass:280, Car: 13, Built at Kanda Shipbuilding) is set to enter service on the Takamatsu-Ogishima/Megishima route on February 28, 2021.
On April 11, 2021, Kokusai Ryobi Ferry's Kokusai Maru No.11 took the water at Fujiwara Shipbulding in Imabari. She is set to enter service on the Ikeda (Shodoshima)-Takamatsu route in the middle of July, 2021. The Kokusai Maru No. 32 (under the nickname of "Giraffe", 749gt, built in 2001) will be replaced.
In May 2021, Utado Unko, which had taken over Mukaishima Unko and Onomichi Tosen, changed its trade name to Onomichi Watashibune.
On July 21, 2021, Kokusai Ryobi Ferry's Kokusai Maru No.11 ("Shimazou" (=island's elephant) or "Elephant", 1,213gt, LOA: 73.05m, Pass: 500, Car: 60) entered service on the Ikeda (Shodoshima)-Takamatsu route.
Ondo Tosen which operates two small ferries on the Ondo-Kegoya route will get out of business at the end of October, 2021.
Aqua-net Hiroshima started passenger services on the Miyajima-Miyajimaguchi route on May 21, 2022.
On August 23, 2022, the Kobe municipal government announced that it will coduct a demonstration experiment between Suma Yacht Harbor and Awaji Koryu No Tsubasa Ko port with the "boh boh KOBE" sightseeing boat on October 8, 9, and 15, 2022.
Shikoku Ferry has ordered a new ROPAX (1360gt) from Shikoku Dockyard in Takamatsu. Shikoku Dockyard will build a car ferry for the first time in 43 years. The ferry is expected to enter service on the Takamatsu-Shodoshima (Tonosho) route in the autumn of 2024.
Bisan Ferry's "Hiroteon" (243gt, LOA: 39m, Pass & Crew: 154) is set to enter service between Marugame and Shiwaku islands (Hiroshima, Teshima and Oteshima) on February 19, 2023. The Shiwaku Maru (269gt) will be replaced.
Sanyo Kisen announced that it will close the Shiraishi-Kasaoka (Fushigoe) route on December 31, 2023.
Shodoshima Maru No.3 (about 1,360gt) for Shodoshima Ferry took the water at Shikoku Dock on May 7, 2024. She is expected to enter service between Takamatsu and Tonosho (Shodoshima island) in autumn of 2024. Shodoshima Maru No.2 (986gt, built in 2003) will be replaced.
On October 11, 2024, Shodoshima Ferry's Shodoshima Maru No.3 (about 1,360gt, car: 60, pass: 490) entered service on the Takamatsu-Shodoshima (Tonosho) route. She was built at Shikoku Dock in Takamatsu.
Fukumoto Tosen, which operates ferries between Onomichi and Mukaishima is set to close a business at the end of March, 2025.
