The Only Japanese Passenger

Do you know the fact that the only Japanese passenger was on board Titanic? His name is Masafumi Hosono（細

野正文）. He was a technician of ministry of transport, studied railway technique in Russia. He returned home

via New York, and then，met “the accident.” Fortunately, he escaped death, but he was criticized again and

again in those Japan. “Why did you escape death? ” “You should be dead like an English gentleman !”

On the other , there was a racial prejudice in those Western society. So the English concluded that all heroes

were the Anglo-Saxon, and all contemptible men were foreigeners ― like Chinese, Japanese, Armenian, Italian

or French. For that reason, male survivors had a hard time.Mr. Hosono left a diary. I read his short diary written

in letter paper of White Star Line, and I recoginaized that he escaped death by chance. He was never a

contemptible man. But Mr. Hosono seldom talked about “the accident.” And he died in 1939.
