Athabasca Glacier - Columbia Icefield -The Columbia Icefield is the largest of the chain of icefields along the Great Divide.This 325 square kilometre accumulation of ice feeds eight large glaciers, three of which arevisible from the Icefields Parkway; the Athabasca, the Dome and the Stutfield Glacier.This is the visual high point of the Icefields Parkway. An access trail takes you to an interpretive trail leading to the toe of the Athabasca Glacier. The Icefield Centre offers information, exhibits and special interpretive events. (Open June to October) Commercial services include Snowcoach rides on the Athabasca Glacier, cafeteria, restaurant and service station. (May to September) |

Snocoach TourFacing the Columbia Icefield Visitors' Centre lies the Athabasca Glacier - a tongue of ice 6 kilometres long and one kilometre wide descending almost to road level. Take time for Brewster's "Ice Age Adventure", a tour onto the icy slopes of the Athabasca Glacier. You will travel in a specially - designed Brewster "Snocoach" to the middle of the glacier, on a 5 kilometre round trip journey. Your driver/guide willexplain how glaciers are formed and point out the interesting geological features as you travel in safety and comfort. |
