アルバータ州の最高峰コロンビア山（3747m）とコロンビア氷河、そしてこの氷河の溶け水でできた湖です。スノーコーチからでは見ることのできない氷河の１つとなっています。

コロンビア・アイスフィ−ルド・センタ−

コロンビア大氷河の観光センタ−として、唯一のコロンビア・アイスフィ−ルド・センタ−
さすがに、カナディアンロッキ−最大の観光拠点”コロンビア大氷河”だけあって、駐車場には、大型の観光バスが５０−６０台、自家用車にいたっては、１００台を超える車が停まっていた．

Icefield Centre

Both main entrances to the Icefield Centre are equipped with automatic doors with interior and exterior sensors. They are not immediately apparent to most visitors, but
those requiring such devices know how to recognize them. The Centre has an elevator that services all four floors; the Glacier Exhibit Gallery, main floor, food floor
and hotel floor. The grand view deck on the second floor has picnic tables designed for ease of seating and are also wheelchair-accessible. There are plenty of barrier-free stalls in both the women's and men's washrooms. On the ground floor and on the food floor there are 'family room' washrooms for people who need the assistance of a caregiver.

バンフ国立公園とジャスパー国立公園にまたがってあるコロンビア大氷原。その面積は３２５ｋ uもあり、東京都がスッポリ入ってしまう大きさです。北極圏を除けば地球上最大の氷原で氷河
期の名残となっています。この氷原の氷がアサバスカ、コロンビア、サスカチュワンなどの６本の氷河へと流れ出ていま
す。そして、各氷河から溶け出た水が各川を通り、３つの海（太平洋、大西洋、北極海）へと流れ
ています。

The Columbia Icefield

In 1898 Mr. J. N. Collie ascended Mt. Athabasca, deep in the Canadian Rockies and looked out to see a vast sheet of ice outstretched before him as if another world had been
revealed.　In fact the Columbia Icefield as the largest chunk of glacier ice in the interior of North America is like no other world. As moist warm air travels east from the Pacific it is pushed up by the gradual elevation gain of mountain ranges and as it reaches its peak over the Columbia Icefield the altitude together with the ice already accumulated cools the air and
precipitation falls as snow.

眼前に、コロンビア大氷河の絶景を見ながら、コロンビア・アイスフィ−ルド・センタ−３階のオ−プン・ベランダで昼食を摂る．
コロンビア・アイスフィ−ルド・センタ−内には、レストランが二つあったが、いずれも満席であった．
とにかく、コロンビア・アイスフィ−ルド・センタ−内は、何百人という人でごったがえしていた．

The Columbia Icefield Chalet

rooms occupy the third (top) floor
of the Icefield Centre; a full dining room and cafeteria fill the second floor; and the Chalet Front Desk, gift shop, SnocoachTour Terminal and Jasper National Park Information Desk occupy the main floor. On a lower level, Jasper National Park operates 'The Glacier Gallery' - an extensive interpretive centre packed with information on this special area of Jasper National Park.

コロンビア大氷河上の雪上車ツア−

コロンビア・アイスフィ−ルド・センタ−の一階からは、コロンビア大氷河上の雪上車ツア−が出ている．
受け付けは、人の行列でいっぱいであった．
料金も高い！
コロンビア大氷原から流れ出ている氷河の１つであるアサバスカ氷河の上を特製タイヤをつけた雪上車で行くツア
ー。５月〜１０月中旬まで運行。シャトルバスがアイスフィールド・センターから氷河の中腹まで出ており、雪上車
に乗り換え氷河を登る。１５分間隔で運行されており、約１時間半のツアー。　料金：　大人　Ｃ＄２２．５０　　子供

私たちは、車で近くまで行き、徒歩でコロンビア大氷河まで行き、氷河の上を歩いて見ることにした．

アサバスカ氷河

コロンビア大氷原から流れ出たのがアサバスカ氷河。長さ約６Ｋｍ、最も厚い所で３００ｍにもなりますが、地球の温暖化で毎年１〜３ｍずつ後退しています。
センタ−から、すぐそこのように見えていたのに、いざ、歩いて氷河に近ずいていくと、なかなか距離があり、氷河の巨大さが改めて思い知らされる．

The Athabasca Glacier

By far the most famous of the six glaciers flowing from the Columbia Icefield, the Athabasca Glacier is not the most spectacular nor the largest.However, at 6000 meters long and approximately 1 km wide it still providesan imposing view to anyone driving along the Icefield Parkway. Although
impossible to see by the naked eye, like all glaciers the Athabasca glacier does indeed flow.
