 Amalienborg Amalienborgand the Royal Guard The winter residence of the Danish Royal Family is Amalienborg. Amalienborg is made up of four almost identical rococo palais, which were originally built by four noblemen in the years 1750-54, on land granted them by King Frederik the Fifth. The Royal Family lived on Christiansborg until 1794, when it burned down, and the Royal Family decided to buy the four palais, name them Amalienborg, move in and live there from then on. |

The Royal Guard Music Corps adds to the generally good mood of the situation by playing birthday songs and other joyful music.At 12 o'clock sharp, the doors of the palais in which Margrethe lives is opened, and Queen Margrethe and her closest family step out onto the balcony, and are greeted with loud cheers. After a while, they move back into the palais, and the also traditional call from thecrowd "Margrethe, Margrethe, kom nu frem, ellers g?r vi aldrig hjem" (Margrethe, Margrethe, come on out, or we will never go home), usually makes the royal family appear two or three times more. |
The Royal Guardan elite force of the Danish Army, has as its main purpose to protect the Queen.
