A native boy in the jungle
EXT - AN ENTRANCE OF A JUNGLE IN SOUTH AFRICA - DAY
Sub title "18th century Some where in South Africa" An intense sunshine is hitting the jungle. The green spreads all over there. JOSTER HONDA, who is a Japanese English wearing a typical explorer's cloths, and JOHN BUNZAEMON, who is a Japanese wearing a coat of a clergyman, is walking in a rough road while looking around.
JOSTER
It' s hot.
JOHN
We are in Africa, you know. It should be different
than the Great Britain.
After he said, JOHN wipes his sweat. JOSTER sighs. They are heading for the interior of the jungle. Sun is shining in the bluest sky.
TITLE "Final Journey"
Staff roll starts.
EXT - A ROAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE JUNGLE - DAY
JOSTER cuts the boughs and goes forward, and JOHN follows JOSTER.
EXT - BESIDES A RIVER - DAY
JOSTER and JOHN take rest besides a river in the wide space of the jungle. JOSTER scoops up the water by his hand and washes his face. He looks comfortable.
EXT - A ROAD SURROUNDED BY THE FOREST - EVENING
JOSTER and JOHN are talking something with smiles while walking. A native boy chases them while hiding behind the bush.
EXT - A ROAD IN FRONT OF A CLIFF - EVENING
Staff role ends. The sunset colors the jungle red. JOSTER finds a cliff ahead.
JOSTER
Hey.
JOHN
What happened?
JOHN looks ahead from behind of JOSTER. The cliff that is not so high can be seen.
JOHN
Oh. What should we do? Go back?
JOSTER
No. I think we can go up. It's not that high.
JOHN
Are you serious?
JOSTER
We can't help it. Let's go!
JOSTER starts walking toward the cliff. JOHN shrugs and follows JOSTER.
EXT - THE CLIFF - EVENING
JOSTER and JOHN help each other to climb the cliff.
EXT - THE TOP OF THE CLIFF - EVENING
A hand appears beyond the rock and JOSTER shows up. He turns back and lifts JOHN up. JOHN climbs slower and looks more painful than JOSTER, and sits down there. JOSTER does too. They look tired.
JOSTER
It was hard.
JOHN
I'm sorry, Joster. I don't get used to do this.
It is getting dark around there. JOSTER takes a lighter and lights it, and looks around. The shadows of the woods and the other plants surround them.
JOSTER
I think we better camp out here tonight.
It's too dark to walk now.
JOHN
You're right. Let's make fire.
JOSTER
OK.
JOSTER starts looking for wood to burn. JOHN sighs while looking up to the sky.
NIGHT.
The darkness ruled the jungle except the top of the Cliff. The cliff is lighted up with a camp fire. JOSTER and JOHN are lying besides the fire.
JOHN
Joster?
JOSTER
Yap?
JOHN
You feel something?
JOSTER
What is it?
JOHN
Well, it's difficult say what it is. It's the feeling
like being held by the earth. It's like happiness
or something like that.
JOSTER
Happiness? Yeah, I did. I feel that I've come
back to the place I was born. Comfortable.
JOHN
You're a...Zoologist, right?
JOSTER
Yeah. Listen, John. I've come here not only to
research the ecology of animals.
JOHN
What do you mean?
JOSTER
Why are the animals living in the nature? Why
don't they have their own civilizations? It's not the
reason that they don't have the intelligence to do so,
I think.
JOHN
...
JOSTER
I wanna know the reason. And I think the human
beings should learn what really the nature is.
JOHN
The thing the people have forgot. Maybe the origin
of religions is in it.
JOSTER
John? Why did you come here?
JOHN
I was exiled from Japan because I am a Christian.
Christianity has been banned in my country. I came
to the Great Britain after that, and had concentrated
on the missionary work, but I couldn't save the people.
JOSTER
So, you've come here to find the way to save the
people.
JOHN smiles wryly.
JOHN
No. I just wanted to leave from the people who
wanted me to save.
JOSTER
I didn't know that the clergyman falls into a
slump.
JOSTER and JOHN laugh. The noise occurs suddenly from the darkness. They are surprised and jump up.
JOSTER
What's that?
JOHN
Beast or something!?
JOSTER stares at the darkness. The grass near JOSTER moves and makes a sound again.
JOHN
Something moved!
JOSTER
Be quiet.
JOSTER stands up slowly and sneaks into the grass. JOHN gets nervous. The noise occurs again and a snake jumps out of the grass.
JOSTER
Oh, no!
JOSTER jumps back and escapes from the snake.
JOHN
What is it!? What happened, Joster!?
JOSTER
It's a snake! I am weak at snakes!
The snake runs toward JOSTER. JOHN takes his rucksack and takes out a gun, and stands in front of the snake.
JOHN
I'll do it.
JOSTER hides behind JOHN with tears. JOHN aims at the snake by the gun. The snake is ready to jump up to JOHN. The gun flashes once and the snake's head is destroyed.
JOHN
Lord, have mercy!
JOHN puts the gun down and prays to the sky.
JOSTER
Finished?
JOHN
Yes. Everything is all right.
JOSTER
Thank you. I hate snakes.
JOHN
Are you really a zoologist?
JOSTER
Since I am a human being, I have a weak point
If you blame me, I'll do the same thing to you. You
are a clergyman, right? But you killed a life.
JOHN
OK. That's enough. We are the human beings.
Sometimes, we make mistakes.
JOHN smiles awkwardly and glosses over.
JOSTER
Anyway, we better get sleep. While one people are
sleeping, another one should be watching out. Let's
change the role every two hours.
JOHN
You're right. You sleep first.
JOSTER
Thanks. Please wake me up two hours later.
JOSTER lies down and covers his face with his hat. JOHN sighs and looks up to the sky. Many stars twinkle in the darkness sky.
